Being an English Teacher in China

During my time in Yangshuo I have taught at one of the high schools and at a privately owned English training college.

The high school is Government owned and class sizes could be up to 60-70 students. However the work load is flexible and time off for students exams or breaks is common. The students are up to the age of 18yrs and many are not at all interested in oral English classes. They only have to pass their exams and most of this can be achieved from the Chinese English teacher. Generally you can feel quite isolated as you only have to do your job and rarely do you get to be part of school life. Accommodation on campus is supplied. However it's easy to make friends with the students. They will seek you out.

Teachers Day DinnerOut with Students

At the privately owned colleges there is a rigid timetable with a lot more pressure to perform well. However all the students are of a more mature age and really want to learn. It can be a pleasure to teach them and many close friendships are formed. Accommodation is still provided but outside of class times there are more expectations to be part of campus life. You are expected to attend English corner in the evening at the very least. Dining with the students is another expectation. Ok if the food is acceptable. You are considered to be a good teacher if you spend time with the students on weekends and evenings thus giving the students more time to practice their English. Accommodation is still provided, but usually off campus.
