My favourite outing from Yangshuo is definitely Fuli. Only 15 minutes by local bus then a 10 minute amble down to the old village near the river. Built over 500 years ago it still retains its original appearance complete with old Cultural Revolution slogans. Narrow lanes with small open drains running along side and doors that open straight out onto these lanes give visitors a glimpse of their lives. Many elderly folk live in Fuli and can often be seen sitting in doorways chatting with friends.
One resident who is "apparently" 100 years old (I was told 90 yrs when I first met her) is a delightful tiny women, very straight and is often out to greet visitors. I am told she has no family.
The village committee ask for 3y to visit the village using this money for a welfare fund for the elderly. There are no tour guides here however one of the elderly people will happily give visitors a tour of their small temple.

Visiting Village Fan Making Factories |
|
The local business is making fans. In many homes visitors will find people busily painting fans. Fans in all stages of production are evident all around the village. One family has a bigger fan production factory where fan assembly can be watched if you are lucky. In one of the wider lanes there are a few shops, to tempt the tourists, where you can see artists at work and women crocheting slippers. There are also several antique shops and roadside stands. Want a copy of Mao's Little Red Book? You can buy one here.

My Favourite Village Restaurant |
|
My favourite restaurant here is the "Three Sisters". Named after a local legend, it sits on the banks of the river inlet, open to the elements, under big old trees it is a wonderful setting without the frills. Order your food from the English written menu then go for a walk for at least 30 minutes. All food is freshly prepared and cooked after it is ordered. Not expensive and always delicious. If a walk is not what you need, sit down with a cold drink and enjoy the scenery & village activity around you.
From the nearby wharf you can catch a boat to other places on the river or continue to wander around the village past the local primary school to soak up more of the old world atmosphere. There is no need to hurry and plenty of wonderful photo opportunities. |
