The Cormorant (also known as a Shag) is a bird which can dive under water and catch fish. This bird has been used since ancient times in this region and is still used today by dwindling numbers of old locals. Shows are held every evening in Yangshuo where you can follow a local fisherman and watch his birds catch fish.

One enterprising family who lives out in the countryside have a big fish farm which has been turned into a fishing/restaurant business for added value. Visitors can catch their own fish then it is cooked for them making it an interesting way to dine out. When I first went to visit this farm outside a small poor village I was amazed to see late model cars parked there. I was told they had driven out from the city for a day in the countryside.
